A galaxy is a large mass of stars, planetary systems, gas nebulae and other stellar objects that are held together by gravity. The name comes from the ancient Greek and goes back to an ancient legend, according to which it is the milk of the mother of the gods. In English, the galaxy is also referred to our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
