By analysing the RR-Lyrae variables in M53 a distance of about 18 kpc (about 60 kLj) was determined, its diameter is about 200 light years. The luminosity of the cluster is about 200,000 times that of our Sun. In February 1777 Charles Messier made this 53rd entry in his catalogue of comet-like objects.
